Chilean Earthquake Shifting the Earth Axis!!?

The diving tectonic plate at the epicenter of the magnitude 8.8 Chile earthquake Saturday helped to temporarily redistribute mass on Earth.

Dear Gentlemen,

Recently, the a 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck Chile and now scientists are saying that it has caused the axis(remember it's imaginary) to shift, causing the spin to be not as fast as before, resulting in shorter days...

Look at the video below to understand...

NASA explained that the key to the shift was due to the location of the Earthquake, with the fault slicing through Earth at a steeper angle, making "Chile fault more effective in moving earth's mass vertically and hence more effective in shifting Earth's figure axis.

You can click on NASA website to read and find out more.

Though devastating, it is really interesting on how what we were studied before and what we are studying now and in the future are really things happening around us NOW.

So remember that our actions and interactions with the environment is very important. =)

  1. OMG axis has shifted??? Just wondering but, if in the event that this happens frequently, will it eventually turn Singapore away from the Equator?

  2. May I know who posted this?

Anyway, I am not a geologist scientist or earthquake expert...but it is possible if such huge magnitude earthquakes occur frequently, a possible "larger" shift in the axis might occur...
